Government of Uganda is set to give 145 seed secondary schools computers to facilitate learning as part of the new curriculum.
This was revealed by the Minister of state for National Guidance in the ICT ministry Godfrey Kabyanga Baluku while appearing before the ICT Committee presided over by the Bunya South Member of Parliament and committee deputy chairperson Idi Isabirye.
He said that there has been an increase in schools accessing computers where 85 schools are being rolled out and another 60 planned for the financial year 2024/2025 to get computers.
“We are going to give more computers this financial year to several schools, I am not going to give you the names of the schools now but we have already agreed to give computers to around 85 schools ,but at least every school will get not less than 10 computers”, explained Hon Kabyanga.
He revealed that by partnering with the Education ministry, they will have covered up to 90% of government schools by the end of 2023 which is around 1200 schools with computer laboratories.

However, some committee members including the Koboko North member of parliament Muas Noah and Bunya South member of parliament Idi Isabirye were concerned about some computer laboratories being idle due lack of electricity to connect computers to power for schools to teach students.
“It becomes poor planning for a ministry to put computers in institutions where there is no electricity, during our oversight work as a committee, found out there are schools in west Nile and Northern Uganda where computers were distributed and power hasn’t reached, its important that these ministries collaborate especially when the ministry of ICT is giving out computers in schools liase with the ministry of Energy to find whether their taking computers there is electricity”,Isabirye said.
