Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda Anita Annet Among has announced plans to vie as the Vice Chairperson Female of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee, a position that is currently held by former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, a move that is aimed at solidifying her position within the ruling Party.

She made the pronouncement during a meeting with the Speakers of Urban Council today at Parliament who under their umbrella body, the Uganda Urban Council Speakers Association, delivered a petition seeking an improvement in their welfare.

“You wanted to know if I am standing for the National position, I am not standing for the position for Eastern region, I am going to stand for National Vice Chairperson, female,” said Among.

This position is key to any person who wants to be in a strategic position like the Speaker because in the Central Executive Committee meetings, many issues are resolved there and someone who is present in such meetings can influence the decisions to go in his or her favour.

Kadaga won this seat after defeating her strong rival the then State Minister for lands Persis Namuganza with 7,045 votes and Persis Namuganza got 4,153 votes.

The two hail from Busoga region, with one representing Kamuli district and the other Bukhono County in Namutumba district fought a bitter campaign.

Now speaker, Among whose husband Hon Eng.Moses Magogo comes from Busoga is also vowing to unseat Rebecca kadaga.

However, it is not yet known whether Kadaga would also accept to be in the race and be challenged by the current speaker of parliament, Anita Among.

All our efforts to reach out to Kadaga for a comment before this publication were futile.
