The Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang has revealed that the Ministry of Education is reviewing an application from Millennium International School in Burundi to obtain a Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) center number.

He revealed this while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs presided over by the Pingire County MP Fred Opolot to respond to issues raised by committee members.

Members of Parliament on the committee wanted to understand whether the Ministry of Education and Sports have plans to establish a UNEB centre in Bujumbura to facilitate the learners in Burundi studying under the Ugandan curriculum to reduce the inconveniences faced by these students who currently have to travel to Uganda to sit for their UNEB examinations.

The committee noted that Millennium International Academy in Bujumbura, Burundi is offering the Ugandan primary curriculum and the school requested the Ministry of education and Sports to review and assess their suitability to operate a private UNEB examination centre.

Ogwanga said that Millennium International academy in Bujumbura,Burundi could host a UNEB centre if it recruits a qualified head teacher in accordance with the Ugandan standards and with at least six qualified teachers as per the Ugandan standards.

Ogwang views this development as a significant step forward for Uganda's education standards, as it promotes regional collaboration and recognition of Ugandan education. “It is one school which is called Millennium International academy, it’s an international school which is under taking the Uganda curriculum specifically for primary education, as a ministry responsible were are able to send our technical team to carryout assessment of whether that school has capacity to uptake our Ugandan curriculum for primary ,” said Ogwanga.

He explained that “we want to confirm that yes in terms of infrastructure it has ,we have recommended that it has six teachers who have a lot of knowledge and experience on our curriculum to be able for us to allow them to a centre number , it's not that the entire Burundi country has applied”.

A section of members of Parliament however are opposed to this move citing uncertainties in mulpractice which might undermine the efforts out in by the government to improve the country's education standards and global recognition.
